The song of August
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL HOENK
The hallmarks of late August on Nantucket have had their say — the Boston Pops, Opera House Cup, and Summer Groove have all come and gone, and the season is starting to wind down. The days are getting shorter and cooler, and vacationers are heading to the exits as kids head back to school families slide back into their routines.
For weeks, the island ran on a familiar soundtrack: waves crashing along the shore, laughter drifting off packed beaches, horns honking through busy streets, live music spilling out of bars and restaurants. Boats hummed in and out of the harbor from sunrise to well past dark, shuttling visitors to and from the island, and the pace of life rarely seemed to slow down. In August, Nantucket is at full volume.
But all good things must come to an end, so the saying goes. As the month draws to a close, our attention now turns to Labor Day, fall sports, and the start of the school year. New songs await and we shall sing them soon.
