Making summer happen

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL HOENK

With the influx of beachcombers, bar revelers, and celebrity guests to Nantucket every summer comes the equally important arrival of the seasonal workforce that keeps the island running. Nantucket's summer season would look very different without them. They wait tables, make beds, stock shelves, wash dishes, drive boats, work farms, serve ice cream, tend beaches, and fill countless other jobs that keep the island moving. Some are college students spending the summer here, while others are year-round residents who have done this dance many times before. Many are J-1 students who travel from across the world to work on the island. As the summer winds down and many start heading home or back to school, we recognize the hard work they put in to make another Nantucket summer possible.
