Nantucket spent Labor Day weekend savoring the final moments of a bustling summer season. Sparkling late-summer weather set the backdrop as visitors filled the island's beaches, restaurants, and downtown streets one last time before the season's close. By Monday, ferries and flights were crowded with families heading home as part of the annual end-of-summer exodus. For islanders, the departure marks a familiar turning point: students back in classrooms, evenings growing longer and darker, and a shift to the steadier pace of September.
