Heroes among us

Egan Maritime and Nantucket Cottage Hospital hosted the 2025 Lifesavers Recognition Day ceremony at the Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum on Thursday. The annual event, celebrated each year on September 11, honors Nantucket’s history of heroic lifesaving efforts by everyday citizens and others. Honorees at this year’s ceremony included island residents Joe Tormay and Nick Whitbeck for their swift rescue of a fisherman clinging to his capsized boat off Chatham last fall. The town’s lifeguards, first responders, and members of U.S. Coast Guard Station Brant Point were also recognized for their service in keeping island waters safe.
