Big votes, big spending

Two nights, over 1,200 voters at peak, plenty of debate, and a lot of money on the table. Nantucket’s 2026 Annual Town Meeting wrapped up this week, with voters approving several major spending projects, including a new $140 million Our Island Home facility, a $25 million high school athletic complex upgrade, and a $44 million sewer expansion near Hummock Pond Road. Short-term rentals, a years-long point of contention, didn’t come up this time around, having been settled last year. The meeting’s closest call was a proposal to extend the ‘Sconset bluff erosion-control project by nearly 3,000 feet, which voters narrowly rejected.
