As Hurricane Erin passed hundreds of miles offshore, the storm’s reach was still felt on Nantucket, where pounding surf rolled in on the island’s south shore. The first impacts were felt early last week, with large waves and life-threatening rip currents prompting the town to close all south shore beaches to swimming. High winds and rough seas also lead to numerous boat cancellations. Meanwhile, crowds gathered to watch the waves, while a handful of surfers dared to ride them.
