Triathlon tradition

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARA WILLIAMS

The Nantucket Triathlon, typically the island’s largest summer sporting event in number of participants, was held Saturday, July 18. More than 700 triathletes turned out at Jetties Beach this year’s race, a mix of first-time and returning racers. In what has seemingly become an annual tradition, islander Beau Garufi claimed the overall title, finishing the quarter-mile swim, 13.4-mile bike ride, and 3.4-mile run in 57:58 for his sixth straight victory. On the women’s side, Olivia Wons of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts was the top finisher with a time of 1:12:04.
