Winter in review

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL HOENK

The vernal equinox on March 20 marked the official arrival of spring on Nantucket, and early signs of the season are already starting to emerge across the island. Days are growing longer, temperatures are rising, and daffodils are beginning to bloom.

The road to this point, however, wasn't always easy. This past winter was brutal, with major snowstorms in January and February, including the Feb. 23 blizzard that cut off power to thousands of island residents. Prolonged stretches of bitter cold only added to the strain. Ferry cancellations became routine during the worst periods, with persistent winds and icy harbors making day-to-day travel difficult. Yet the island showed its resilience, as repair crews worked tirelessly to restore power and clear roads, while residents adapted as best they could to the outages and delays.

Now, the island is looking ahead to the warmer months and another busy spring season.
