A year on Nantucket

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL HOENK

Photographer Bill Hoenk spends his days the way any person who has ever been to Nantucket could only dream: he roams the island, camera in hand, drawn to moments when the landscape shifts or a face in the crowd tells a story worth preserving.

Nantucket is always changing. Summer fills the island with visitors chasing its history and beaches. Then there is the quiet constant: the year-round community that remains when the crowds thin and the island settles back into itself. Autumn arrives crisp and alive, winter stretches on too long, and spring passes quickly.

Through every season and every transition, Bill Hoenk is there. He turns changing light, moving tides, eroding shorelines, and the ebb and flow of people into his subjects, capturing the island with both intimacy and intent. Leaving the island doesn't end the work; wherever he travels, the camera stays close, ready for the next story.

Below are some of Hoenk's favorite photos from the past year, moments that lingered with him long after the shutter clicked — both on Nantucket and beyond.
