Savoring September
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL HOENK
Last week's autumnal equinox made fall official, and the first signs of the shoulder season have reached Nantucket. After a long and lively summer, many islanders are ready for the slower pace.
But before we settle into fall, we mustn't move on too quickly from September, which brought its own share of moments to be savored. Not fully summer but not quite fall either, September offered no shortage of reasons to gather: fall sports back in action, football games under the lights, awards ceremonies honoring neighbors, and gatherings all month that kept the island buzzing as summer wound down.
And then came the nor'easter, a stark reminder that, no matter how carefully we plan our calendars or how tightly we hold onto the season, nature always has the final say.
