Litter Derby

More than 130 volunteers rolled up their sleeves for the 6th annual Nantucket Litter Derby, hitting the streets and beaches to give the island a much-needed clean-up. Over the course of two days, 23 teams joined forces, hauling in 15.24 tons of waste. The trash tally included 14,180 pounds of metal, 8,410 pounds of non-recyclable junk, 3,380 pounds of glass, 2,014 pounds of hazardous materials, and 1,060 pounds of plastic. After the cleanup, the celebration shifted to Cisco Brewers, where derby organizer Leah Mojer crowned the champions. First place went to the Cleaniacks, who scooped up six truckloads of trash, earning themselves a $1,000 cash prize. The Nantucket Land Bank took second place, while the Trash Picker Uppers snagged third.
