Debates and defeats

Nantucket voters packed into the Mary P. Walker Auditorium over the weekend for this year's Annual Town Meeting. Saturday's nine-hour session delivered a mix of expected approvals and surprising setbacks, including the failure of a $125 million proposal to replace the town-owned skilled-nursing facility, Our Island Home. The meeting reconvened Monday at 5 pm, with discussions on short-term rentals taking center stage. It marked the fifth consecutive town meeting where voters tackled the topic, which has emerged as one of the island's most contentious issues amid an escalating housing crisis.
