Celebrating a star

August 1 marked the 207th birthday of Maria Mitchell, the trailblazing astronomer and educator born on Nantucket. To honor her legacy, the Maria Mitchell Association hosted a celebration at its Vestal Street campus over the weekend, featuring free admission to its museums, live animal displays, and hands-on science activities for kids and families. Staff and volunteers shared stories about Mitchell’s life and work, highlighting her impact on astronomy and education.
